Master models for composite moulds

Master models for composite moulds

We design master models and moulds for composite lay-up and make them using large-format 3D printing.

Boat hulls, fairings, covers and other complex shapes. We design the model to your requirements, split it into segments, print them, and assemble, bond and weld the segments into one piece. We make positive master models (plugs) and negative moulds, trimming templates, drilling jigs and any other process tooling. No more costly and laborious hand-made plugs.

PETG is our main material for master models and moulds for composites. Its glass transition temperature is around 75–80 °C, so it withstands short-term temperatures of about 70 °C that typically occur while the resin cures.

On request we also print moulds in ABS. With some limitations they can be used for vacuum forming of plastic sheets – suitable for prototypes and small batches; the mould life depends on the sheet material and thickness.

What we offer:

  • Designing the 3D model to your requirements – including from a 3D scan of an existing part
  • Splitting the model into printable segments
  • Printing the segments in PETG on large-format printers
  • Assembling, bonding and welding the segments into one piece
  • Positive master models (plugs) and negative moulds
  • Trimming templates, drilling jigs and other process tooling
  • Printed moulds for small batches of composite parts
  • ABS moulds for vacuum forming – for prototypes and small batches

We don’t do the final surface finishing (filling, sanding and fairing) – that is left to the customer. If needed, we can arrange it with our partners, along with the production of the composite parts themselves.

How it works: send us a 3D model of the part or describe your requirements – we can design the model ourselves, including from a 3D scan. We propose the segmentation, the material and the process, then print, assemble and deliver the model ready for surface finishing.
